SUMMARY:ICCA Energy & Climate Change Leadership group to participate in UNFCCC Asia Pacific Climate Week
DESCRIPTION:During the UNFCCC Asia Pacific Climate Week (6-9 July) many policymakers will debate in virtual thematic sessions the pulse of climate action in the region\, explore climate challenges and opportunities\, and showcase ambitious solutions. This is a platform for regional stakeholders to have their voice heard and contribute to COP26. ICCA has been granted a side event during the Asia Pacific climate week and will dedicate this event to the innovative role of the international chemical industry in mitigating climate change. \nThe side event is organized by the ICCA Energy & Climate Change Leadership Group (E&CC LG). \nThe side event will address a selection of exemplary solutions from the global chemical industry to support the transformation toward a low-carbon society. Five main sectors were identified in which low-carbon transformations can be achieved: Power generation and storage\, Mobility and transport\, nutrition\, and agriculture\, Building and housing and Industry and production with 17 solutions having a carbon mitigation potential of 5 to 10 GtCO2eq/year by 2050. This amount is equivalent to one or two time the USA annual greenhouse gases emissions. \nWe would like to invite you to participate in this side event to hear more about differences in economic systems\, geographical circumstances\, infrastructures\, market needs and the level of societal and political acceptance—even among adjacent countries and economies—that make it necessary for tailored development trajectories to be designed. \nThe event is public. You can join using the link: \nhttps://sdk-mtg2.webex.com/sdk-mtg2/j.php?MTID=mda2ea86105b80c52fc838a5990a42e02

SUMMARY:Argentina: Our Commitment to SAICM
DESCRIPTION:A diverse group of industry\, government and international experts have convened in the city of Buenos Aires to support strengthening the sound management of chemicals and waste in Argentina. The meeting\, hosted by the Argentine Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development in cooperation with the UN Environment Programme and the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA)\, aimed to strengthen cooperation between government authorities\, industry\, the United Nations and other stakeholders in order to improve chemicals and waste management at the national level in Argentina. \nRecently\, Argentina was granted funding from the UN Special Programme for a project to “Strengthen the national capacity for the sound management of chemicals and waste.” The Special Programme aims to support institutional strengthening at the national level to enhance the implementation of the chemicals and waste conventions and achieve the 2020 goal of sound chemicals management under the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).  CIQyP is a leader in implementing Responsible Care in the South American region and sees the Special Programme project as an opportunity to strengthen the recognition of Responsible Care product stewardship practices within developing Argentina policies and to accelerate implementation of the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling within Argentina\, which aligns with the ambitions of the national government. \nThe group focused on four main objectives: \n\nEnhance implementation of the UN Special Programme through a transparent\, cooperative relationship between government and industry;\nEnhance Responsible Care® and product stewardship implementation;\nEnhance implementation of the Globally Harmonized System for Classification & Labeling (GHS); and\,\nFacilitate the establishment of a chemical control framework\n\nRecognizing the need to correctly manage chemical products and minimize adverse impacts on human health and the environment\, participants discussed how to enhance regulatory frameworks on chemicals and waste and how to enhance Argentina’s Responsible Care® Program\, which is the global chemical industry’s voluntary commitment to drive continuous improvement and achieve excellence in environmental\, health and safety\, and security performance.  In addition to enhancing Responsible Care® implementation and awareness\, the event also highlighted a project financed by the UN Environment Programme in Argentina\, which aims to support institutional strengthening at the national level to promote the mainstreaming of the sound management of chemicals and waste.  Topics such as improving implementation of the GHS and establishing a risk-based chemical control framework also were addressed. \n
