ICCA Statement on WTO Public Forum
Washington DC, 13 September 2024 – The International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) released the following statement after attending the WTO Public Forum in Switzerland. The statement can be attributed to ICCA.
“ICCA and its members applaud the WTO for hosting a successful Public Forum in Geneva. An ICCA delegation participated in this year’s Forum including Jason Bernstein from the American Chemistry Council, Nicole Mlade from ExxonMobil, and Deidre Penfold from the Chemical and Allied Industries of South Africa. ICCA delegation members met with WTO Director General Ngozi Okongo-Iweala and several government delegations to discuss our commitment to work on global solutions that will address plastic pollution and reduce plastics leakage into our environment.”
With the right enabling framework, trade can be a critical accelerator of plastics circularity and generate long-term solutions to address plastic pollution. ICCA’s recent position paper outlines specific, pragmatic recommendations on how WTO and other multilateral organization and processes (e.g., UN/ILBI, Basel) can work constructively together to promote an economic model that supports governments’ overall national agendas of increasing trade and investment while delivering environmental solutions.”
