More than 30 National Responsible Care Associations Commit to Enhancing Safety and Sustainability Data Reporting

Brussels, Belgium (14 October 2024) – Today, the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) announced a new initiative to support and enhance collection of global chemical industry safety, environmental, health and sustainability metrics. The Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Enhancement Project, developed and supported by the ICCA Responsible Care Leadership Group, establishes a platform for verifiable collection of performance metrics by national associations and organizations practicing Responsible Care.

Responsible Care is the global chemical industry’s initiative to drive safe chemicals management and achieve excellence in environmental, health, safety and sustainability. Through Responsible Care, chemical manufacturers and national chemical associations commit to improving performance, engaging with stakeholders, promoting transparency and working with commercial partners to extend the Responsible Care ethic throughout the value chain. Since its launch in Canada in 1985, Responsible Care has grown to nearly 70 economies worldwide.

Notably, more than 30 national chemical associations have pledged to report key performance indicators under the new platform, reaffirming their commitment to progressive development of indicators against which improvements can be measured, one of eight fundamental features by which all national associations practicing Responsible Care are commonly held.

Jeff Kovacs, Chair of the Responsible Care Leadership Group, noted, “The launch and deployment of the new Responsible Care KPI reporting tool marks a significant milestone for the global chemical industry and our journey to drive safety and sustainability in our products and our processes. Tracking and measuring industry KPIs will support effective management and enhancement of environmental and safety performance and build trust and accountability with our global partners and customers.”

This announcement also illustrates meaningful progress in support of the ICCA’s ambitious goal of enhancing availability of data on the safety and sustainability of chemical products by 2030, launched at last September’s International Conference on Chemicals Management, held in Bonn, Germany.
